An excellent opportunity is available for an experienced Data Steward / Data Governance & Metadata Analyst / Data Custodian to join a NSW Government agency and play a key role in strengthening data governance, metadata management, data security, and data quality practices across a major program of work.

We are seeking a well-rounded professional with strong communication skills and a solid understanding of data structures, data interconnections, metadata, data catalogues, data glossaries, and data governance frameworks. This role will be instrumental in helping define, document and govern how data is understood, used, secured and managed across the organisation.

This is a great opportunity for someone who can work closely with stakeholders to obtain permissions, clarify appropriate data usage, and support the development of data policies, security procedures, data standards and governance artefacts.

Experience with the Aristotle metadata tool will be highly regarded, though it is not essential.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in a Data Stewardship, Data Governance Analyst, Metadata Analyst, Information Governance Analyst or similar role
  • Strong understanding of data governance, metadata, data cataloguing, data glossary development and data management principles
  • Experience writing and maintaining data definitions, business glossaries, data catalogues, reference materials, policies or governance documentation
  • Strong understanding of data structures, data relationships, data flows and data interconnections
  • Experience working with stakeholders to clarify data meaning, usage, ownership, permissions and controls
  • Ability to develop or support policy, procedure and security documentation related to data use and governance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to work across business and technical teams
  • High attention to detail and strong documentation capability

Highly desirable:

  • Experience in NSW Government or broader government environments
  • Experience with a metadata management tool such as Aristotle
  • Exposure to data security, information governance, data policy, master data, reference data or data quality frameworks
  • Understanding of enterprise data environments and governance best practice

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain and enhance the organisation’s data glossary, data catalogue and data reference documentation
  • Support and implement data governance, metadata management and data stewardship practices
  • Work with stakeholders to identify, define and document critical data elements, business terms, data definitions and reference data
  • Engage with business and technical stakeholders to seek permissions, obtain clarifications, and support compliant and appropriate use of data
  • Assist in developing and documenting data policies, data standards, security procedures and governance controls around the use of data
  • Support understanding of data lineage, data structures, data relationships and data interconnections across systems
  • Help improve consistency, quality, transparency and governance of enterprise data assets
  • Contribute to the uplift of data security, data ownership and controlled access practices
  • Support governance forums, working groups and stakeholder discussions relating to metadata, policy and data usage
