The Background

Our client is one of the largest financial institutions in Australia as well as Asia pacific region, offering a wide range of banking and financial services to its customers. We initially connected with the institution when they attended an industry networking event that was hosted by Infinity Pro and their general managers attended.

They later approached us with a specific requirement related to their architectural needs within the retail banking segment of their business.

The Challenge

The requirement for this architecture vacancy was to lead the redesign and modernization of the entire data warehouse and business intelligence/reporting functions.

This encompassed a broad spectrum of technologies, both existing and new, such as Teradata, Oracle Databases and Data Warehouse, Netezza data warehouse appliances, Tableau reporting and visualization, and their financial planning and reporting functions spanning across TM1, Cognos, and Hyperion. Additionally, the architect had to work with various other legacy data sources and reporting analytics, including those consumed by their data engineering and data science functions.

Understanding the redesign of a modern data warehouse and relevant business intelligence and analytics functions was crucial. Given the scale of the data, the complexity of the business, the variety of technologies involved, and the potential impact on the bank’s daily operations, made the requirement highly demanding and niche in its nature.

Remarkably, the client themselves stated they believe that there were probably fewer than five candidates in the whole of Australia capable of successfully executing this task.

Despite having a dedicated internal recruitment team and previous engagements with consulting firms, the client had struggled to find candidates with the specific skillset and experience required.

The position had remained open for over 6 months and the client was not any closer to finding the appropriate candidate before they approaches us.

The Approach

As the position had been available in the market through other recruitment agencies, there was an already established reputation for this position as not being fillable. Some candidates in particular had known about the position and were wondering why it had not been filled as yet.

While the vacancy offered a great opportunity to the right candidate, it had not been treated as such by previous recruiters.

We recognized early in the process that some degree of reputation repair was essential.

In addition to the above, Our approach was tailored and methodical in engaging only the appropriate candidates for this position.

Efficient Candidate Sourcing: Leveraging our extensive database and industry connections, we identified and reached out to potential candidates with a proven track record in architecture and data analytics who had worked at the same scale as our client needed. The combination of deep Boolean search, active referrals, passive candidate contacts, industry forums amongst other search methods, resulted in a small pool of initial candidates.

Quality Assurance: Our team conducted in-depth interviews and technical assessments to ensure candidates not only had the required technical skills but also fit well with the company’s culture and values. This meticulous screening process reduced the risk of turnover and ensured a seamless integration into the team.

Cost-Effective Solutions: Recognizing the client’s budget constraints, we offered competitive pricing without compromising on the quality of candidates or service. Our transparent fee structure and flexible engagement model allowed the client to save significantly on recruitment costs.

The Results

Within four weeks, our recruitment agency successfully identified, introduced and placed a highly qualified candidate who in fact exceeded the client’s requirements. So much so that the client was happy to wait several months for the candidate to start with them as the candidate was not available immediately. The candidate not only possessed the technical expertise but also aligned with the company’s culture and values, ensuring a seamless integration into the team.

Moreover, our solution proved to be significantly more cost-effective than the previous engagement with the consulting firms and recruitment agencies. The client was able to save a substantial amount in recruitment fees, while also benefiting from a faster and more efficient hiring process.

The Conclusion

This case study highlights the value of partnering with a specialized recruitment agency that understands the nuances of the industry and the unique challenges of hiring for hard-to-find skillsets. Our expertise in the architecture and data space, combined with our tailored approach, cost-effective solutions, and industry recognition, enabled our client to overcome recruitment challenges and secure top talent in a competitive market.
